As businesses step up their support for working families, are formal policies enough? New research suggests that family-friendly leadership might have a bigger impact than the policies themselves. Here’s what that means for your workplace.

A new meta-analysis has revealed an important trend in workplace wellbeing: informal supports - especially having a family-friendly supervisor - seem to have a bigger positive impact on employees than formal company policies.

The study, published in the Journal of Vocational Behavior, analysed data from 229 independent samples across 211 studies, covering a staggering 748,796 respondents.

Rutger Blom and his team set out to explore how family-friendly policies and workplace supports shape career outcomes, job satisfaction, and work-life balance. Their findings offer plenty of food for thought for workplaces looking to provide real support to working parents.
