With International Women’s Day approaching, it's easy to assume gender equity is something that matters only to certain groups. But the truth is, it’s not just about fairness - it’s about creating better workplaces, stronger economies, and a more functional society for everyone.

Whether you’re in leadership, a team member, or someone navigating daily life, gender equity shapes the world you operate in. So if you’ve ever thought it doesn’t affect you, it’s time to take a closer look.

With International Women’s Day coming up on Saturday 8 March, the conversation around gender equity is in the spotlight again. While it’s still an important time to celebrate women’s achievements and call out the gaps that remain, progress isn’t always as fast or as widespread as it should be.

More and more, businesses are moving beyond token gestures like the old iced cupcake check out this excellent Australian campaign) and looking at what it really takes to create lasting, meaningful change. Of course, to do that, everyone needs to be in the room.

Yet too often, the conversation feels like it’s happening in an siloed echo chamber. Real change takes everyone - including men - getting involved.

Professor Ivona Hideg, an expert in gender equity at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, says, "We usually think about gender inequity impacting women. And they do impact women in multiple domains from workplace to home to culture.”

However, she says, “What we never talk about is how much this inequity actually hurts and undermines men as well."
