Has anyone else suddenly become an armchair expert in fencing? Up until 48 hours ago, I didn’t know anything about it, but after losing an hour to the sport, I’m now somewhat of an expert*. (*Not really, but did you know New Zealand hasn’t had a fencer at the Olympics since 2004?).
With everything going on, it’s a such welcome relief to have something inspiring to focus on, and the Olympics are doing just that. Watching these incredible athletes push their limits after years of training and sacrifice, and finally competing at the highest level, is a much-needed source of joy and fun.
There are many incredible stories of overcoming the odds too. And when it comes to raising awareness and breaking down stigma, it’s hard to go past American gymnast Simone Biles. She’s not only an extraordinary athlete (7 Olympic medals and counting), but she’s also an incredible role model for speaking up about mental health while under immense pressure.
